Mountain seeds are different after unbaking

Hi! I baked some nodes to export the heightmap of a mountain I was creating. I didn’t save after baking so they stay unbaked. Then I closed my pc. I turned it back on and I opened my project to find the mountains looking different. I don’t have the old seeds and I’m pretty sure the cache is lost. I tried going through my autosaves and they still look different.

Before

After

You may have more of a ground truth this time regardless, the cache could have been throwing issues, if nothign has changed but it is different.

So what should I do to get the old look back? Is it gone?

@TyXanders Couldn’t we also facilitate a potential bug/cache improvement on this one?

Maybe warrants at least a behavior analysis.

Probably worth the bug report if we can deduce what the order was:

  • bakes must be saved
  • User baked then exported
  • User had a before screenshot at one point

Ideally a workflow here would have been to use incremental saves to branch a before and after, though it shouldn’t have been needed, which is why it makes me thik the cache was showing the wrong “before” Anyway.

what’s wild is older auto saves and back ups dont match the before screenshot, which makes me think the former did happen.

the diag should maybe hold all this information though. would be nice to see what nodes were used too.

Do you have 2 files you’re able to share or a minimal rebuild? where you feel before and after is? might be able to help disect

The thing is all autosaves and save files changed somehow. Even the ones before I baked and unbaked

I baked > exported > closed project without saving > accidentally removed cache > loaded up project and unbaked

These are also all the nodes

It happened again. Please fix this. Everytime I bake to export I make sure not to save the project so the nodes stay unbaked. When I open the project again it’s completely different.

Genuinely you don’t need to not save because you have to save to bake and you can always just unbake the nodes.

I can say this alone may not cause the issue you’re experiencing but it is adding an unnatural workflow which could complicate things unnecessarily.

It might be worth using incremental save (+) icon near save before you bake, then bake and compare the outputs. You will have two clean projects then independent of the state of one another.

Also technical bug report would be essential to fix. The Devs can’t fix anything not sent to them so be sure to do this
